An Island with a History
On December 5, 1492, Christopher Columbus discovered the island that he later named Hispaniola. The indigenous people called it Quisqueya, which, in their language means Mother of All Lands. The Dominican Republic occupies the territory that hosted the first permanent European settlement in America; among other “firsts” in the Americas, it was home to the first university, the first cathedral, and the first royal court.
The Dominican Republic is located centrally in the Caribbean Sea, at the convergence of all the routes of the Americas and the rest of the world. This makes it a geographically advantaged location for trade and tourism. Hispaniola is the second largest island in the Greater Antilles, and it is part of Central America and the Caribbean region.
The Dominican Republic is a fertile country, with almost 80 % covered by mountain ranges that run from the Northeast to the Southwest. Pico Duarte (3,175 m) is the highest point in the Antilles. The Cibao valley, one of the most fertile and best watered regions in the country, is located between the Cordillera Central [Central Range] and the Cordillera Septentrional [Northern Range], a range that runs parallel to the northern coast. The country has many important rivers, the Yaque del Norte, [Northern Yaque], Yuna, and Camú in the north; the Yaque del Sur [Southern Yaque], Ozama, and Soco in the south; and a large saltwater lake, the Lago Enriquillo, in the southwest.

Samaná
The Samaná Province is located in the northeastern region of the Dominican Republic. An extraordinary place rich in history, traditions, gorgeous beaches, and natural marvels. Before being categorized as a province, it was created as a Maritime District and Samaná town being a free port benefited from a prosperous trans Caribbean trade. It is now recognized as an excellent location for vacationing and it’s best value for money ratio for investing in real estate and residential and touristic developments.
One of its most notable characteristics are that its people still retain many different cultural aspects of their origins such as the slaves escaped from spanish colonial plantations (Cimarrones), french slaves brought to Samaná under french rule for the purpose of founding Port Napoleon (Santa Barbara de Samaná), the freed slaves brought from the United States (mainly Pennsylvania) under Haitian rule of the island, non spanish speaking workers brought from many other Caribbean islands (Cocolos), settlers brought from the Canary Islands (the founding fathers of Santa Barbara de Samaná) and the descendants of colonial settlers of mainly european ethnicity brought to Samaná from the central region of the island (Cibao). Testimonies of that heritage are the Samané language (a patois of english, french, spanish and african words), the Protestant religion, the Bamboula dance, Victorian architecture, magical-religious manifestations (originating in Gabon) and coconut rice and fish, just as much as the tendency to music, traditional fishing and craftsmanship of the descendants of the settlers from the Canary Islands or the extensive and natural way of agriculture stemming from the original pre-Columbian tradition. Its capital, Santa Barbara de Samaná, has a port from which boats set out on excursions to observe humpback whales during their annual visit in the winter months to mate and give birth in the warm Caribbean waters and to many national parks and reserves as well as other touristic and scuba diving hot spots.

Samaná Town
Samaná town claims an unusual history and, as a result, an unusual character. Originally found in 1756 by settlers from the Canary Islands it was later also settled by two shiploads of freed American slaves in 1824 and, to this day, many residents speak English as a first language. The US cultural influence is also apparent in many of the last names of the inhabitants of this area. Nowadays urban renewal is ongoing and continuously improving the infrastructure and commodities the town of Samaná has to offer .
Las Terrenas
Definitely worth a visit. It’s blend of Caribbean beach live and European flair created by a combination of vast stretches of beaches, a multitude of restaurants, cafes, bars, bakeries and boutiques offer a wide variety of delightful experiences. Definitely the best shopping and culinary outing on the Peninsula.
Beaches
Las Galeras (about 30 minutes from Samaná town) offers one of the world’s best diving spots and beaches such as Playa Rincon.
Cayo Levantado is an island of about one square kilometer, made of a protruding coral reef, which protects Samaná bay from the Atlantic waves. With its lovely white sand beaches flanked by tall coconut trees, this island is a popular day’s outing.
Playa del Valle, idyllic fisherman romantic combined with wild nature, a picturesque well-kept secret also supposedly discovered for real estate investment by Shakira.
Playa Fronton, a unique untouched beach set in front of a spectacular cliff only reachable by boat, hiking or on horseback.
El Limon Waterfall
Definitely a must visit. The waterfall is about 300 meters above sea level in a setting of virgin tropical forest and has a 40 meter drop into a deep swimmable pool of crystal clear waters.
Whale Watching
Samaná has some of the best whale watching in the world. Every year excursions set out to meet with the frolicking giant creatures between the end of December and the beginning of April.
Los Haitises National Park
Easily reached by a short boat ride across the bay Los Haitises National Park is known for having one of the most important rainforest and mangrove reserves in the entire Caribbean as well as numerous islands (cayos) populated by seabirds and its caves are bearing testimony to the culture of the original inhabitants (Sequoias) through the petroglyphs on their walls. You should only enter the park with a certified guide.
Biking, Mountain biking, hiking, horseback riding
There are few destinations as great as Samaná for this combination of sport and Eco tourism. There is no better way to explore what the peninsula has to offer. End the day with a plunge into the sea at a deserted beach.
Cave explorations
Samaná offers many caves waiting to be explored. You are likely to sight petroglyphs and pictograms dating back to the original pre-Columbian society. Samaná was also the site of the first hostile encounter between the original population of the island and the Spanish intruders and their last refuge before retreating to the mainland in the south.
Rock climbing
Rock climbing enthusiasts should definitely plan a day at Playa Fronton reachable on foot, horseback or by boat from Las Galeras.
Zip Line
A spectacular day out on one of the most breathtaking zip line parks combined with a visit of the unique Dominican Tree House Village hotel and the picturesque beach Playa del Valle.
